Receptions, Constellations, and Horizons of Phenomenology in Italy from Banfi to Today

The project explores the influence, development, and contemporary relevance of phenomenology within Italian philosophical traditions, from the 1920s to the present day. While the reception of phenomenology in countries such as Germany and France has already been extensively researched, Italian phenomenology, despite its significant contribution, remains underrepresented in research on the history of philosophy.

The aim of this project is to address this gap and to work out the distinctive characteristics of Italian engagement with phenomenology.

Goals

  • Produce a comprehensive handbook on Italian phenomenology, detailing its historical evolution and interdisciplinary connections, supported by international collaborations and conferences.
  • Develop a digital platform offering translations and discussions of essential Italian phenomenology texts for an international audience.

Key Research Questions

  • What defines the distinct characteristics of Italian phenomenology?
  • In what ways has Italian phenomenology been shaped by its dialogue with other philosophical traditions, including Italian Idealism, Marxism, Pragmatism, and Thomism?
  • How did the political landscape from the postwar period through the 1970s influence the priorities and inquiries of Italian phenomenologists?
  • What interdisciplinary contributions has Italian phenomenology offered, and how can these insights be leveraged in contemporary research?
  • How might the concepts and issues explored by Italian phenomenologists inform current debates in areas such as philosophy of mind, social and political philosophy, and the theories of art and literature?
