Dr. Elia Gonnella pursued his studies for the bachelor’s degree in philosophy, anthropology, and literature at the University of Siena, discussing his dissertation on the philosophy of sound. He then continued his studies in philosophy at the University of Verona, graduating on the phenomenology of sound. He is now a doctoral candidate at the University of Salento in joint supervision with Universität zu Köln. He has lectured in international congresses (ICNAP-CPPA 2023; CHAP 2023; “Parole, cose e simboli. Tra antiche e nuove rappresentazioni del reale” 2024; WCP 2024). His philosophical interests include phenomenology, in particular the phenomenology of perception, and especially the phenomenology of sound, new ontologies, anthropology, and philosophical anthropology.
Research Project
Edmund Husserl’s Phenomenology of Sound Consciousness
Husserl’s writings are far from being associated with musicological and aesthetic problems. Although there are some references to music and art, which, especially in some Letters, suggest a deep relationship between phenomenology and art, there is not much room for a Husserlian approach to musicology and art. One way to deal with this is to focus on Husserl’s phenomenological approach and apply it to issues concerning music and art. Historically, this is a very well-grounded attempt. Nevertheless, the project recognizes these efforts and attempts a different approach.
Sound research only coincides to a small extent with the musical and aesthetic research pursued by phenomenological approaches. It includes research into perception, theoretical approaches to the relationship between humans and the world, problems of the philosophy of language and linguistics, the theory of intentionality, affects, and corporeal studies. In this sense, sounds belong both to the musical realm and to the experiences of everyday life. The point is that the phenomenology of sound consciousness encompasses all phenomena of the sound world, such as noises, tones, blasts, rustles, and so on.
The project deals with the question of sound consciousness and asks what it means to hear a sound in the world, as well as distinguishing different forms of experience. The main aim is to emphasize the intentionality of sound, as well as the bodily role in perception, in order to delineate a pure Husserlian phenomenology of sound. Although some scholars have noted Husserl’s central contribution to the phenomenology of time and applied it to the realm of sound and music, Husserl’s sound analyses remain fundamental to a spatial investigation of sound as well. Therefore, the first part of the project focuses on demonstrating the inevitable investigation of sound and time and attempts to elucidate a relationship to eidetic phenomenology. The second part of the project aims to develop a Husserlian phenomenology of sound in relation to space and sound sources.
